When we flick through television channels today, all we see is reality show after talk show after quest competition and what’s the main aim of all these? To find true love. Shows such as the Bachelor have brought love to us in a whole new packaging and in my mind’s eye, the infomercial would go a little something to the tune of this,
‘Are you looking for love in paradise? Maybe even hunting for Mr or Mrs Right in a parallel world of sensationalisation and day dreams? Well then this is definitely the show for you! Sign up to be one of our lucky contestants on the new season of the Bachelor!’
Now how absurd did that sound? Almost as absurd as the idea that love is now palpable and purchasable.
A man and a woman, living in a small shack, surviving from hand-to-mouth with 4 children can have a love so strong, not even their circumstances could break it. And why does it always happen that way? Because their love is REAL. It has nothing to give and nothing to take. All it is, is two hearts, compromising their everything to make one another happy. It’s a love that has braced the elements and that’s what love should be.
If love were to be personified in my eyes, I would imagine it to be an old woman. Why not a man?! Because a woman can be stern and soft in one go. She would be stout and love good food. She wouldn’t have that many wrinkles but more laugh lines and age spots. She would hug you and you would feel the warmth of her embrace right down to your toes. But if you disobeyed her or betrayed her, just by one look and you would know how much wrong you’ve really done. But at the end of each day, she’d smile a big smile and tell you how lucky she is to have you in her life.
So love needn’t have all these frills and gourmet meals, it definitely doesn’t need money to show how tremendous it can really be. All it needs is life… And of course two hearts that are willing to be with one another.
